Summer 2021 | 2022

This semester, students in Year 6 have had the opportunity to explore their passions and immerse themselves in a project of their own choosing. The results are as diverse and  engaging as the students themselves, with projects ranging from fan fiction, art and craft, to sport.

Writing a Novel

For my passion project I chose to write a Hunger Games Fan Fiction. This fascinated me because I love to write and am very interested in the Hunger Games series. Fan Fiction is when fans write stories or scripts based on certain books or movies. It is an interesting way to involve your imagination in a world you love and know so much about. I have never written Fan Fiction before so taking on this task was huge. I have read the Hunger Games trilogy and watched all of the movies, so I was already immersed in the world of Panem. After researching more about Fan Fiction and watching and reading many examples, I settled on this for my passion project.

When writing a book, titles and blurbs are extremely important. They can draw readers in and make them curious about the book or push them away. When coming up with my title I thought about the concept of my book and what might intrigue readers. Eventually I came up with Broken in Half. To complete the story during lockdown before returning to school onsite, I needed to manage my time well. This meant writing through the holidays and weekends and committing to getting down to work. While I found it easy to find time for it, I didn’t always want to write. I would rather be FaceTiming my friends or doing other activities. However, I was able to push through this barrier by thinking about how amazing the final product would be. When I finally finished, my story was more than 11,000 words!

Create an Item of Clothing

I chose to go down the paths of sewing and create an item of clothing for my doll because I wanted to learn decent sewing skills that I haven’t tried yet that can help me in the future.

During my Passion Project, my idea got shaped along the way, but I found ways to solve sudden problems. A major problem that occurred at the end of this process was, a couple days before the due date, I decided to use a hot glue gun to fix up a few holes where the edges of the dress didn’t connect to the zipper.

After adding the hot glue to the zipper, I realised that the zipper didn’t zip any longer! I frantically began to cut at the dried glue but I couldn’t save the zipper! In the end I decided on something that wouldn’t take too long to do. I cut the zipper off and replaced it with a zig zag design with a button on the back of the dress.

During this process I learnt many new skills such as, invisible stitching, how to sew on sequins, how to sew on a zipper and other general hand - sewing skills. Most importantly, I learnt how to solve problems efficiently.

Origami Love Hearts

To start off my passion project, I learnt how to make some origami love hearts. I drew happy faces and silly faces and I made sure to make all of them unique. My goals were to make enough love hearts for all the residents at the aged care facility my mum works at to receive a love heart for their rooms. I wanted to do this because they can’t see their families during lockdown and I wanted to help to brighten their days.

I chose to do this for my Passion Project because I am passionate about helping people and I believe there is no better way to help someone then to make them smile. I wanted to learn a new skill during this project, so I decided to learn how to make origami. More specifically, origami love hearts. I hope I helped to brighten someone’s day.
