Parent and Guardians Code of Conduct

1. Purpose

Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School is committed to ensuring that the School environment is safe, positive and supportive for students, staff, parents/guardians, visitors, contractors, volunteers and all members of the broader School community.

This Parent Code of Conduct provides clear guidelines for parents/guardians about the conduct expected of them whilst on School premises, engaging in School-related activities and/or representing the School.

2. Policy

This Parent Code of Conduct applies to all parents/guardians of students enrolled at the School. The application of this code is not limited to the School site and School hours. It extends to all activities and events that are school related and when visiting and/or representing the School.

For the purposes of this Parent Code of Conduct, ‘parent/guardian’ includes any adult who plays a parental or caregiver role in relation to an enrolled student.

3. General Expectations

The School expects all parents and guardians to:

  • Support and uphold the School’s values
  • Support the School’s firm commitment to child safety and uphold all applicable aspects of the School’s related policies including the Child safety and Wellbeing Policy, Prevention of Child Abuse Policy and Responding to Child Abuse Policy
  • Not place the health, safety or wellbeing of any other person (including students, staff, parents/ guardians, volunteers, contractors, visitors or other members of the School community) at risk
  • Abide by the health and safety practices in place at the School, and at other locations at which the parent/guardian may represent the School or interact with members of the School community
  • Treat all people you deal with through the School and in the School community with dignity and respect
  • Refrain from all forms of bullying, harassment or discrimination against any other person
  • Respect the School’s risk management processes and follow any reasonable direction given by staff when attending the School premises, School events or School activities
  • Respect the authority of members of staff and observe school rules as required
  • Respect and support the School Expectations of Students
  • Refrain from activities, conduct, or communication that would reasonably be seen to undermine the reputation of the School, employees, or students of the School (including social media activities)
  • Respect School property and the property of students, staff, contractors and volunteers
  • Respect the privacy of all students, staff, parents/guardians, volunteers, contractors, and other members of the School community
  • Not be intoxicated by alcohol or under the influence of illicit drugs whilst on School premises.
3.1 Specific Expectations

Positive role modelling:

  • Abide by the School’s policies, procedures and directions, and encourage your child/ren to do the same
  • recognise that the School is inclusive and welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds and with different needs
  • Encourage your child/ren to actively participate in the life of the School, including in the variety of sporting and co-curricular activities available
  • When dropping off and picking up students from the School, adhere to all applicable speed limits and traffic signs and park appropriately and safely
  • Never smoke or vape on the School premises or within 4m of entrance points, and observe the exclusion of dogs from the School premises
  • Be responsive to concerns raised by the School about your child/ren, including by being cooperative, providing information and attending meetings when necessary

Use of technology and social media:

  • Do not use your personal online presence to raise School matters or otherwise engage in disrespectful behaviour toward staff members
  • Do not use information provided to you by the School for personal gain or advantage
  • Do not create social media accounts that represent or could reasonably be perceived to represent the School
  • never take photos, videos or other recordings of another student without express consent or publish information (including personal details, contact information, images and recordings) about a staff member, parent, student or other member of the School community online without express consent
  • avoid publishing information which may bring the School (or any of its staff, students, parents and other members of the School community) into disrepute
  • do not discuss confidential or sensitive School matters, including any matter relating to grievances about a particular staff member, students or other parents, online.
4. Raising Concerns
  • Raise any genuine concerns or grievances appropriately and constructively, in the first instance with your child/ren’s class teacher, in line with the Complaints and Grievances Policy
  • Never communicate with another student about an issue concerning your own child/ren
  • Never attempt to discipline a student who is not your child nor be aggressive or hostile when communicating (verbally or non-verbally) with a student from another family or any other member of our School community
  • Respect that the School employs experienced educators and other professionals who are well-placed to make academic, disciplinary, co-curricular and wellbeing decisions and that the School must ultimately make decisions that take into account the interests of all relevant parties
  • Acknowledge that there are limits to what information the School may share with a parent when issues arise to appropriately and necessarily protect the privacy of other members of the School community.
5. Unacceptable Conduct

Parents and guardians are expected to refrain from engaging in any conduct which the School considers unacceptable.

Unacceptable conduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • violence (in any form) or threats of violence
  • any form of cyber bullying or cyber abuse
  • verbal abuse or threatening/offensive language, gestures or behaviour
  • conduct of a sexual nature (including grooming) with a student or child
  • unlawful behaviour, including harassment, bullying, discrimination and criminal conduct
  • theft, fraud or misuse of School resources.
6. Working with Children Checks

All parents or guardians who volunteer at the School are required to have a valid Working with Children Check (WWCC), and have undertaken the LinkSafe induction for volunteers. The induction can be accessed via the following link http://www.linksafe.com.au/iva....

7. Breaches

The consequences of a breach of this policy will be determined at the discretion of the Principal and may include:

  • A request that the relevant conduct immediately cease
  • A written warning
  • A meeting with the Principal
  • A direction that a parent/guardian may only communicate with relevant staff through a nominated person
  • A parent/guardian being unable to attend School premises, School events or School activities either for a specified period or permanently.

In the case of extreme, flagrant, repeated and/or prolonged breaches of this Parent Code of Conduct by a parent/guardian, the School may cancel the enrolment of a child/the children of that parent/guardian.

In accordance with applicable legislation and the School’s child safety policies, relevant authorities will be informed of any unlawful breaches of this code as required.
