With the support of the Ivanhoe Girls’ Old Grammarians’ Association, the Careers Breakfast Series was introduced in 2026 in response to student interest in hearing from more Alumni working across a range of industries professions.
This year, the series featured two breakfast events: a Careers in Medicine Breakfast held in March and a Careers in Engineering Breakfast held in May. Students in Years 9–12 with an interest in medicine, engineering and STEM pathways were invited to attend one or both breakfast events.
The breakfasts provided an opportunity for students to connect directly with professionals working in fields they may be considering a career in. Through small groups, round table discussions, students were able to ask questions and hear firsthand about university study, career pathways, workplace experiences, and industry developments.
The format encouraged open and honest conversations, giving students valuable insights into life beyond school.
At the Medicine Careers Breakfast, students met Alumni Kathy Huang (Class of 2014), Jamie Cheong (Class of 2005) and Petrina Barson (Class of 1981), along with current parent Leah McDermott. Together, they shared their experiences of studying and working in healthcare, highlighting the many different pathways available within the medical profession.
The Engineering Careers Breakfast included Marija Guleva (Class of 2013) and Jade Fisher (Class of 2020), who returned to share their journeys from school to university and into industry. They were joined by current parents Marcelle Gannon and Daniel Beuchat, as well as Suzan Abdelkader, who is involved with the Ivanhoe Girls’ empowerED project.
Their varied backgrounds gave students an insight into the breadth of opportunities within engineering and the different directions an engineering career can take.
Initiatives such as the Careers Breakfast Series highlight the strength of the Ivanhoe Girls’ community, bringing past students, community members and current students together to share experiences and careers.
In 2027, the School looks forward to offering further opportunities for alumni to connect and network with each other in a social setting. More details will be available in early 2027.
