Marching to the Beat: A New Band Tradition Begins

Earlier this year, our Senior Concert Band and Senior Drumline came together for the first time to form our Ivanhoe Girls' Marching Band. Over the course of Term 1, these groups rehearsed in preparation for the ANZAC Day March. We enjoyed Friday afternoon rehearsals, first marching on the spot and in circles while memorising music, before marching all over the School grounds to practice walking and playing at the same time (which was surprisingly hard!).

The day itself was very enjoyable, and the students performed to a high standard, especially those who were marching for the first time. We were lucky with fairly cool weather, which we were grateful for with how sweaty we were by the end! We had to adjust to marching on tram tracks and with bollards in the way, but we managed with minimal collisions!

We were there with many other school music groups, as well as various military regiments, which promoted the feeling of unity. It was great to contribute to the broader community and gain musical experiences outside of the classroom.
