Tea Time Brings Big Conversations to Little Learners

At the ELC, we deeply believe in safe and supportive relationships as the foundation of providing a child-safe environment.

Tea Time prioritises the voices of the children, creating a quiet space within the busy Kinder week where we come together as a class to explore important concepts and ideas, often related to our feelings.

Each Tuesday, we gather to share a cup of herbal tea. Some of the concepts explored during Tea Time include:

  • Body safety
  • Talking through peer issues as a group
  • Exploring our feelings
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Our senses and how they influence our emotions
  • First Nations perspectives
  • Reflecting on our favourite events
Educator Poppy Gerakas and I thoughtfully set up Tea Time by playing calming music, diffusing essential oils, and providing different teas to try each week. Children take turns being a Tea Time Helper, where they fold away individual mats, clean the tea cups, and pour any leftover tea into the garden.

Some of our favourite Tea Time reflections include:

“I feel happy when someone plays with me. When I play on the monkey bars, I feel strong and happy.” Frankie
“We can’t keep secrets from teachers and mums and dads." Heidi
“Caring for Country. It’s picking up rubbish even if it’s not ours.” Raya
“Drinking this tea makes me smile. I just love it.” Abby
